This popular and attractive houseplant is known for its velvety, heart-shaped leaves and vibrant green to bronze coloration. It belongs to the Araceae family, and is often prized for its easy care and ability to thrive in a variety of indoor conditions.

Appearance

  • Leaves: Soft, heart-shaped, and velvety in texture, often have a shimmering appearance, with colours ranging from deep green to a rich bronze or copper shade, especially under bright light. New growth is typically lighter and more vibrant in colour, while older leaves darken as they mature.

  • Size: It can reach lengths of 3 to 6 feet (or more) in optimal conditions.

  • Growth habit: It's a trailing or vining plant, meaning it can cascade down from hanging baskets or climb up a moss pole or trellis if you provide a support.

Care Requirements

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light, though it can tolerate lower light levels. However, in low light, the plant's growth may slow down, and the coloration of the leaves may not be as vibrant. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, so it's best to keep it out of direct sun.

  • Watering: Water when the top inch or two of soil feels dry to the touch. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so make sure the pot has good drainage and the plant isn't sitting in water. In the winter months, the plant’s watering needs may decrease as its growth slows down.

  • Humidity: This plant thrives in higher humidity levels (60% or more), but it can tolerate average indoor humidity as well. If you notice the tips of the leaves browning or curling, it might be a sign that the air is too dry.

  • Soil: A well-draining potting mix is essential. The roots prefer slightly moist soil but don't like to sit in water.

Common Problems

  • Yellowing Leaves: This can be a sign of overwatering, under watering, or nutrient deficiencies. Always check the soil moisture before watering.

  • Pests: Can be susceptible to common houseplant pests like aphids, spider mites, and mealybugs. Regularly inspect the plant and treat any infestations promptly.

  • Leaf Curling: This could be a sign of under watering, low humidity, or environmental stress.
